10 Steps to Become a complete Digital Marketer in a Year & Earn up to 1cr

How oto become a successful digital marketer in a year

You must be thinking that it’s impossible to achieve 1 crore In a year from digital marketing but what if I show you a very logical way to reach there in just a year. You Just need to be consistent, focused, and persistent to reach your goal. Keeping it really simple. As a snapshot – Identify your niche, identify the gap in the niche, provide value to your audience, gain their trust and confidence over time then solve their problem by giving a product/service at a cost.

I will show you stepwise of how to reach your goal by creating a product, marketing it & eventually selling it. In the process, the optimization will take place and finally, your product will shape-up as a brand.

In the below example I have shown that your

Price of the Product x Size of audience = Earnings. This is the end goal that we need to reach, now lets dive as to how to do it.

1.Identify your market – It’s very important to understand which market to play in. Is the market big enough to start with or is the competition really high? Evaluate the opportunity cost with what you are doing now? Vs what you are planning to do?

For Example, look at the chart below – If you want to sell online courses, so looking at the chart below – There are 18 million wi-fi users and I can only reach to them as they will have internet access hence it becomes my universe.

2. Identify your niche – The next step is identifying the niche you want to play in. you can’t play with a mass approach. It has to be narrowed down. So the 2nd question you need to answer your self is how to identify the niche?

For example – suppose you are good at ‘cooking’ don’t jump to creating food videos and posting as half of the world is doing the same. How you can differentiate is to choose a niche inside cooking like healthy cooking for an urban class in metro cities, the content can be like ‘health breakfast web series’ mention the calories and proteins consumed. All those who subscribe give them a chart, provide diet plans and customized recipes at a premium price, quiz them after your recipe, ask them to share videos, call some of them on your show, do an online competition. You can create a complete ecosystem around the healthy eating niche. I mean I am thinking out of the box, it can get as innovative as possible.

Look at the diagram below: You need to identify the common spot where your talent, passion, and demand in the market meets. So spend some time here to experiment as to what are you good at and where to start with?

3. Start providing Value & Gain trust – If you go with an intention to sell you will never be able to do it. Start with the intent of identifying the need of your audience. Websites like ‘Quora’ & ‘google suggest’ will give you an idea of what is that your audience is searching for? Start creating valuable content on those lines. Once you start giving them value, they will start gaining trust in you and eventually, that trust will help you become a brand. So suppose you want to dive into a niche of creating designer wear, it’s important to understand what’s trending and in which niche the noise is loudest.

The below example clearly states designer wear for men is trending and questions like ‘what to wear to work as a clothing designer’. It will give you some clarity of thoughts and direction as to what to write & how to proceed.

I personally follow 80:20 rule. Where for every 10 content pieces I share 2-3 content pieces are to push a product to the audience, 7-8 are just pure valuable content.

4. Create a Product – Create a product that can sell and has a lot of value. Once the customer buys it. He should feel delighted that he can go forward and do word of mouth and the product will advertise itself after a point of time. For example – Jamshedji Tata started with TATA motors and established trust in his communication. Now TATA stands for trust and can sell anything under their brand name.

If the product is not good and marketing is great, the essence will fizzle out as soon as the marketing is over. The product/service will not be able to capture it for long.

For example – If you are into cooking, the product can be

a. live workshop for cooking

b. Recipe book for health eating

c. Connect food with mind and soul and create a collaborative workshop with other audience

d. One to one session

All these can be packaged into a product and sold after you have a good follower base.

5. Start creating an email list – The meat of everything is how big your email list is. This is the biggest asset that you can create. Create seamless automation where you stay connected with your audience outside your website and you keep on interacting with them and keep on sharing valuable assets whenever possible. Consider your audience as your girlfriend. You have to pamper her, talk to her every day, understand her needs, and give her freebies. In return, she will be loyal, happy & stay with you forever. So in the digital world, you need to do the same and keep interacting with your audience, Invite them to different social media forums as well and keep on engaging with them on as many touchpoints as possible this will increase your per time spent with your audience.

I personally have created a drip marketing automation. I have created a series that I keep activating for my idle audience so that the interaction never stops. Whoever has shown interest in my introductory series, I push them to another series to give more value in the process & so on. This increases the stickiness.

6. Follow the AIDA Model & Do A/B Testing – AIDA, The most effective conversion formula available to covert the audience. Design your creatives/content for all layers of the audience. Understand the model and start following it.

a. Awareness – Start capturing audience who are close to your exploratory search and start promoting your free course/webinar anything which you feel can add value to them. Don’t promote your product directly. It will never sell as the relationship is yet to be established.

b. Interest – At the end of every content push them to subscribe and keep interacting with them on different forums to develop the interest.

c. Desire – Now you can give them a choice to attend a webinar or buy a course. At this stage, they will be evaluating your course with other courses and decide whether to go ahead or not.

d. Action – Give a discount or support which can be the moment of truth, it triggers to take action immediately. I use Retargeting a lot in this space as my ads are shown only to the desired audience who are already in the consideration set.

e. Loyalty – Once the audience has come inside the ecosystem. Start giving more value that they eventually become your advocate and promote your products through word of mouth. I use a drip emailer as my primary tool here as it keeps pushing relevant content to them and helps stay connected.

6b. Do A/B Testing to optimize – Once you have established your funnel. Start experimenting with different creatives, content, landing pages, offers, and so on. So how I follow A/B testing is once I have set up the complete funnel. We make the creative ‘A’ live for 20 days then ‘B’ for another 20 days. Post 40 days we compare the reach, impressions received on each creative, and accordingly choose the creative we have to go forward with.

Please note you can change only one element at a time while keeping the rest of the elements constant or you won’t be able to measure it effectively. Once you have identified the creative, now do the same experiment with the landing page like modifying the content and so on.

7. Do integrated digital marketing – Please, please, please understand you can’t win a war with just one strategy. There has to be constant interaction from all directions. So on average an individual spends 3-4 hours on the internet. It is divided between work, email, OTT, Social media, content & so on. You have to buy time in as many elements as possible.

You can’t do just SEO and generate leads or just do paid media and generate traffic. It has to be a combined effort of 4-5 channels coming together.

The different audiences will be at different stages of your funnel hence you have to keep interacting with all at a given point of time. So be omnipresent on social media, paid media, write regular content, push 2-3 emails per week and keep talking to them. Until there is a brand hijack in their minds. For example brands like Xerox which have been so deeply engraved that it has a monopoly in the market. The below diagram will give you a clear picture of the mediums being used at different funnel stages.

8. Type of ways you can earn income – Once your traffic starts flowing in and you have a good traffic base. There are various ways by which you can monetize that traffic. Explore the list below and start writing now

  • Affiliation – Affiliation marketing is the best way to start. Whatever niche you have selected, start identifying the 3rd party products in the space and start promoting. Now the product is not yours and it can be a good experiment to understand how are your skills in terms of selling other products.
  • AdSense – Once the traffic start pouring on to your platform, you can enroll for AdSense and use retargeting banner ads on your website. This will increase the number of impressions and CTR overall.
  • Influencer – You can reach out to corporates and agencies and explain your niche to them. Look out for collaborations and tie-ups. This will help you gain more followers. There are a lot of agencies that are hunting for influencers.
  • Sell Courses & Webinars – One of the most popular ways Is to sell courses. As per the success rate, it has been observed that there is a conversion rate of 5-10% of the total mail list of people engaging with you. So if you want to sell it to 1000 people, your mailing list should be at least 10000-15000.

9. Personal Branding is as important as promoting the brand – Elon Musk has more followers then TESLA. Ratan Tata’s actions give fuel to its brand TATA and trust as an element is imbibed in the audience’s mind for TATA. So every individual plays a huge role in terms of shaping and positioning its company value. It is highly advised to keep interacting with your audience to understand their pulse & keep optimizing your funnel & product. Your personality reflects your company’s value. Look at Aamir Khan example below, Image 1 talks about his attributes & 2nd image is highlighting the brands done by Amir Khan. Brand personas are matched with Actors personas to finalize on brands by the industry.

10. Analytics – The core of digital marketing. The measurement tool that gives you an idea for success & failure of the campaign. Make sure you get yourself acquainted with the free tools like – google analytics, google tag manager, AHREFs, Search console. These tools will give you a base to start with and push.

Once you get a hang of the process. The only process to reach your goal is persistence and consistency. If you keep on doing things with focus & persistence, you will definitely reach your goals in a year.
